My wife and I are building a 3-story 52' diameter 16-sided "round barn" on our farm here in Northeastern VT for hay storage as well as additional animal housing. We are looking for someone who can help us with the joinery design. We are planning to begin the site work in April, then start working the timbers in May or June after we get our spring field work done.

Hi Michael -- Sounds like a very interesting project. I'm in the Middlebury Vermont area and could help you out with joinery design, on going consulting and/or joint cutting and raising. I can also put you in contact with the Huntington, VT based structural engineer I use if you just need someone to run some calcs for you.

Please call or email to discuss further.

Thanks --

Hi Steve & Green Fire Farm,

PM's - Personal messages that can be picked up from the TFG Forum by the recipient without it being posted on the board.

Re our granary water ingress problem - no we have not yet managed to identify exactly where this water is coming from but as someone pointed out from previous photos posted this it is not a new problem. I recently established that at some point in time - probably the mid 1800's that the whole building was swung through 180 degrees because the current North East corner shows the same (actually worse) weather deterioration on the interior with some of the transverse joists having had new ends scarfed in to replace rotted out ends.

Apparently in English common law granaries that just sit on staddle stones and are not fixed to a foundation are not classed as buildings but instead as "moveables". There is a distinction in English law between Heritable (fixed) and Moveable buildings with this stemming from the days when tennant farmers (i.e. rent the land rather than own the land) moved from farm to farm and took their moveable buildings with them. I suppose a bit similar to taking the dog kennel with you when you move.

The good news is that since spring the whole floor has dried out nicely though today we have a major storm just arrived by jet stream from Canada that is providing lots of South West wind driven rain. I will check the floor again today to see if its wind driven rain rather than gentle rain that is causing the problem.

Regards

Ken Hume
