I'd like to cut octagonal pegs for a raising coming up in june. I've always split and chopped out my pegs but the building being raised is an octagon, so I thought octagonal pegs would "fit right in". Are there folks here who've used this peg design before and how are they sized and cut?(table saw?) The frame in question has 1 and 1 1/8 holes.

Hey Mark:
Make a jig out of a 2 x 4 board that has a "v" groove milled into the face of the board. Take your square peg stock and place one edge in the "v" groove and rip the square edge off of the peg stock. Repeat the process and you end up with an octagonal peg. Pretty quick process. A fella on the forestry forum send me some pics of this simple jig and I gave it a try. Able to produce about 100 pegs in an hour. Pretty quick set up. Cheap set up and best of all, it works.

Joey -what tool are you using to rip with? What size square do you start with? My compass and ruler say that an exact fit requires stock that is slightly under 15/16" An exact fit, I imagine, would be too loose. 31/32" looks tight on paper........

Mark, I multiply diameter times .95 for the square stock size.

Hey Mark:
I've tried both the table saw and the bandsaw. I prefer the table saw. It produces a cleaner cut. I agree with Roger. Use .95 times the diameter. It works out pretty close.

Hi Mark,
I used octagonal pegs on my cabin in B.C. I bought them from a fellow named Carl Steepleton at Steepleton Construction in Ohio. A bit pricey but they look great. I think they were 15/16" across the flats. Another way to make them is to cut several parallel V-grooves into a piece of plywood. Rip your peg material into square stock about 4-8 ft long and lay several pieces into the v-grooves on the plywood and feed it through a bench top planer (a small Delta 12" works fine). Repeat this 3 more times rotating the stock 90 degrees each time. Voila, octagonal pegs.
