Ok I don't know the answer to this question and am wondering where my chopping block used to be in a frame and what it was joined to. Here are some pictures.

Is the overall 10"X10"? In the first pic it looks like a motice with a shoulder on one side and a chamfer on the other(for assemlby ease)? How wide is that mortise? Is it blind or thru? It also looks like is has another mortise about 5 inches up. What do you think fellas- Is it a post or a tie beam or a plate? to have those two mortices sitting on top of one another doesn't help. Why would you have two beams on top of one another. Depending on the type of barn it came from, they could have done any number of odd things in the design to create other rooms or stalls etc. If it is as big as the timber appears, I'm thinking it would have been a post.

Hi Derek and Brad. Derek, I was thinking the same thing but wasn't sure because there is not post below the 2nd level post. I suppose that a post might be further down the tie and not under the strut and 2nd post. No pegs holes suggest gravity is doing the work. That first ground post couldn't be to far away. Are these pictures too little do determine the type of structure or truss possibly?

Anyone else with a different view?

P.S. This old wood was re-used in a mock arch brace, that's braces don't arc. This is just remnant. Good chopping block though.

Go over to Mark's post in "whatch doing now" page 4 and look at the joinery under the fellow standing on the triangle. I am not sure what is going on there maybe Mark will explain.

I at first thought tie beam, rafter pocket and strut then quickly gave up, no peg holes and it was late, now I can't get that out of my mind as a solution. Then Mark's work came up. Tim
