Will SU run on a Linux system? I've finally got a connection capable of downloading, but we ditched Windows. Thanks.

Not really. Note: A Linux version of Google SketchUp isn't available at this time. However, you may be interested to see how others have had success running Google SketchUp on Linux using Wine.

Thanks. It looks like that is out of my league. I don't have the experience to make all that work. I've been thinking of getting a Mac to run some programs. I'll not be toying with Windows again.

I'll have to eat my previous words re:Windows. As it turns out, this machine is partitioned, and has Vista installed. I've got SU running, but it almost caused three strokes, two aneurysms, and half a conniption fit. As it is the only free option, I'll have to run the win partition. I'm off to study SU.

So, where do I begin? I didn't see a thread here on a tutorial for SU, but I didn't read them all. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a step-by-step on drawing a simple frame in sketchup? Thanks.

Come take my Heartwood Workshop... Plenty of great vids and tutorials on the SketchUp site to get you started with the basics. -Mike

bmike, it is very tempting, I could see it would be handy for documenting old structures and the storage and sharing of such.
I am on a Mac is that an issue?

Tim None at all. It works well on Mac and PC. There are oddball issues on both depending on what video card / drivers you are running, but for most folks it works great out of the box. I used to take a paper pad and pencil and film camera to the job site when I was documenting and moving barns. If I had this technology then, I'd take the paper and pencil, laptop, and a digicam. Document all the big things on day one with paper and pencil and depending on the building (leaky? power?) maybe the laptop in a central location, then in the hotel @ night build up what I could in SketchUp. Day two would be to double check and verify and get all the minor components together. If I had helpers with me I could pilot the laptop and let the helpers pull dimensions and shout them out as I noted them in digi form. Then a full documentation with the digicam.

And the SketchUp for Dummies book is good overview... but flying design software is a lot like timber framing - learning hands on and with guidance will (hopefully) be more valuable than the hundreds of articles and books you can read about layout and cutting of joinery.
