Great curiosity concerning the availability of red elm saw logs. Have looked extensively in New England and come up rather empty. Found some but lacking in quality and size. Anybody know of cutters, log yards, saw mills that keep an eye out for such seemingly exotic lumber.

we have a tree that we call "rock elm" here in ontario, and the heart is darker than the standard variety. I've sawn two trees out of maybe fifty or so elms in around 20 years of sawing. To be honest I think you would have a tough time finding mills that would saw elm.... not too much demand and the wood is hard to cure in anything but logs or timbers. Even in timbers elm is quite snakey.

Vern,

I would suggest looking for sawyers in the Ohio area. Red Elm is an occasional around here. We have used it in a frame with seven other species. It's beautiful wood. Poor man's walnut. Watch out for the shrinkage and moisture cycling! It's easily twice what Whaite Oak is.
