Actually the barn is in Westbrook on Route 302 near the intersection of 302 and Pride Street.

Joe, if it was really square rule joinery you'd see housings at every joint, for example between the tie and post or the post and plate. As your photos don't show any housings I'd have to say it appears to be a scribe rule barn. Unless someone else on this forum can explain it better and show us examples from your photos that prove it is square rule.

So, having said that, it could make the date of the barn earlier than 1820.

One way to investigate age is to look at land tax records with either the town or look at deed records at the county, sometimes the deeds mention structures.

Actually there are housings in the majority of the joinery, I didn't get any pictures of them though.

I did look through the town records yesterday and have on record that the house/barn was built in 1824. I don't know how accurate the records are. I'm surprised that timbers are so small in dimension? I would have thought that there would be plenty of big timber around that time?

I go by the intersection of Pride St and 302 almost daily. I'll have to take a drive-by. What makes me think the barn is circa 1900 is the split-pane windows and the iron additions w/ the square nuts.

But these could have been later additions, not original components. What does it have for a foundation? What are the nature of the sawmarks on the wall studs (this studding is another indication of a later date)? 1824 is not typical for square rule...a little too early, but there are always exceptions. That's what makes this stuff interesting.

Hi Joe,

Went by the intersection yesterday. Is it the yellow place? Perhaps we can meet up there sometime... Always nice to meet a local TF enthusiast.

Hi Don, no, you must be looking at the house on Pride Street. This is a white cape at 405 Bridgton Road (route 302). As you're travelling towards Portland, it's on your left just before the intersection of 302 and Pride Street. Nobody's living there, I think it's been a while since it's been occupied. It's not locked.

I'm not going to be around for the next week or so, perhaps next week?

OK, I think I know the place...It was for sale for a while, right? I remember Pride Street in your earlier post and had that on the brain.

I actually took a picture of this place last summer b/c it's an old place in the middle of a growing area. I like to document barns in my neck of the woods.

You say it's not locked. Is that an invitation to check out the barn? ...I'll wait until we can get together. I'll send you a private message w/ my phone #. Give me a call next week or whenever you return.
