I just thought I would put this out there...I am making a complete set of framing tools appropriate for the period of 1650-1700, of English design.

I happen to have a blacksmith nearby who is experienced with making these tools and I have placed a basic order for about 15 items from axes to hook pins.

I thought I would ask if anyone has any tools from this period they would be willing to sell. I intend to use them and do living-history demonstrations with them. I would prefer to have authentic tools, but they are quite rare to come across for sale and can be more expensive than having them made.

I also am not yet an expert on this period and am interested in books that give the history of tools; when they were invented or came into common use. Were there an innovations in this period I should be aware of? I think the spirit level was not invented yet; what shape level is most appropriate?

I know boxwood and hickory were used for toolmaking and hafting. What other woods are appropriate for toolmaking?

Thanks;
Jim
