I sent you some info via the regular email system. But I will post what I do know.
The handles are made of hickory and they are for an axe head with a 1" x 3" eye.

TB:
I emailed Tom about the handles, and he replied:

Jim,
The handle are steam bent and are made to a universal size, i.e. the size that is most common. In other words, they we fit most axes, tho, as usual, will need to be "fitted" by the owner to his particular ax. The wood is second growth hickory as is the best for handles. If i remember correctly, I did "flame harden" and oil these handles.
Tom

That's all I got so far...

Ok, now I'd like to know what second growth hickory is, and what flame hardening is please?

Brad:
Ok, so when you go to a forest and cut down trees for the very first time, known as "old growth" the annual rings are very close together and dense. When this forest grows back the new trees are second growth. The rings of these trees aren't so close together, and this is suppose to be better for handles.

Flame hardening is a name given to treating the wood with a flame to give it some character and it doesn't actually harden the wood, at least that was what I was told.
If you view the pictures in my gallery on the FF you'll see the handles.
Jim

I've got some old-growth something I've been chiselling away on in the shop. I think it might be rock elm. You'd be hard pressed to break a handle made of that stuff. crazy

Why would old growth and second growth be any different? An old growth tree was a new tree once. Is it that a younger tree will have wider growth rings? Is it that old growth trees that we have experienced were under more stressed conditions during their lives and therefore have narrower growth rings than today, assuming that today and in the near future we predict that we will not have such stressed conditions?

I can understand why fewer growth rings would be advantageous, much like Osage was split by the Indians to have a single growth ring, thus flexible and strong. I just don't exactly understand why a newer tree would be different than an older one as far as the width of its growth rings. A tree doesn't know it's a second does it? Or maybe it has something to do with an old growth tree, grows among other old trees, and has to fight for light, and grows slower due to less direct sunlight. When old trees are clears(usually by us), more light= more growth in a given year. Maybe through deduction I just answered my question?

If you want more information about the reason why second growth is better then old growth, email my friend Tom Perkins and he can explain it better to you directly.

Sorry to be ignorant, again, but what does the code after the price on the chisels refer to? My TF friend said I should get a 1 1/2" chisel but not sure which I'd want.

btw, I see you have some Adze handles. Do you have any Adze heads?
