Hi there - great site, by the way!

I just noticed on an old forum discussion a brief warning about about seasonal sap-related restrictions for felling White Pine, and I would like to know if this is a concern that might effect my plans.

I have been planning to use ash from my property to frame a barn/ workshop, but I've just stumbled into a considerable amount of large, straight white pine that was knocked down nearby in a windstorm within the past three weeks.

Is the fact that these trees came down in early April in Southern Ohio of any concern to me in regard to their quality?

Furthermore, I can get some really big timbers out of these trees (10 x 10s and 12 x 12s), but are there any applications for which I should avoid using this wood? Thanks.

Harvest and mill as soon as possible to reduce loss due to staining.
At that time you can inspect for damage....

I would much prefer to use the Pine. Ash is far more likely to split or curve, and hard to carve.

At least here in NH, pine must be sawn promptly before borers or bluestain attack the logs in warm weather. Once sawn it must be immediately stickered and dried carefully to avoid stain/fungus. Although stain won't hurt much except cosmetically. It can be part of the rustic look if you aren't fussy.

White pine is a first class wood for timber framing.
