Hi everyone, just joined the forum tonight.
I'm on the verge of building some small 9'x13' sheds w/8' high posts. The plates are 6x8's and the posts are 6x6 (everything is oversized actually) I've built them with Doug Fir but am curious to know what differences/loads cedar would pose for me. Sooooo, if anyone has some ideass or knowledge that'd be much appreciated.

Across the design value tables Doug Fir is 50% or more stronger than Western Red Cedar. I wouldn't advise designing for tension, but that goes for Doug Fir too.

The Guild's "Timber Frame Joinery & Design Workbook" is available through the store on this website. It has all the design values and lots of other info that would help you with this problem. If you like good reference books, buy "Understanding Wood" by R. Bruce Hoadley. You will be glad you have both.
