I recently came across an article on "rubble trench foundations" that
introduced me to a cheap, quick and seemingly effective foundation
technique. I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with rubble
trench foundations and/or could recommend any good places to learn
more about it (specially effectiveness, design and construction issues).

I have used a rubble trench foundation. The only detailed article regarding rubble trenches that I found was one in Fine Home Building, available in their concrete-foundations book. Otherwise they are mentioned briefly but without detail in numerous places. The article in FHB is all the information you really need. The most important aspect is making sure that the gravel is thoroughly compacted in shallow layers (6") and that the drainage tile is properly wrapped to prevent clogging.

Tim, thanks for the response. What size structure was that? Are there any size limits I should be aware of for a rubble trench foundation?

The building I used the trench for was a 24 x 48 story and a half timber frame. As for size limit I am not sure what you mean but I would imagine most residential/ light construction will fit. Compacted gravel has very high load bearing capacity so the real limit is the soil which in turn supports the gravel. Soils that will wash away or into the trench can not be used.
