Wondering about discrepancies on horizontal shear values. Sobon's house book list EWP #1(beams and stringers) as 65. Then on a another reputable site the listing is 125. This is quite a difference. The 65 seems right but then why would there be so many varying values?
What then is the true value for #1 Northern red oak, and for all #1 red oaks(beams and stringers)?

The NDS values were reviewed and update a few years ago. This may have been after the book was published with the old values.

Current values are 205, I believe.

I seem to remember that when the numbers were updated as Jim said, it was because they found a redundant safety margin of 2 that they removed which more or less doubled the design values.

So that makes more sense. That also helps a bit with some deeper beams, like 3-4" deeper than they are wide, as they tended to pass easily in bending while having a difficult time passing horizontal shear. So you would end up having to widen a beam which would kind of force you widen the posts that accept as well.
Jim, that 205 is for red oak right, but the #1 EWP(Beams and stringers) would be 125 right?
Thanks guys. Makes design a bit more simple. tb

One online site where you can find this values is here:

http://www.forestryforum.com/members/donp/Fblist.htm

I believe DonP updated this after he verified that these numbers were correct at that time.

PS. I did a save as and saved that web page to computer so that you can access it off line.
