We have had a couple of Bosch 1034VSR High-torque drills for a year or two now and love the power, but hate the plastic junk handle they send out with the drill. We have broke handles on both drills because they are just not able to withstand the torque from the drill. Here is the drill I am talking about: http://www.timberwolftools.com/tools/bosch/bosch.html

What I am looking for is recommendations on a new drill that can withstand driving 10" GRK screws day in and day out.

Have you looked into impact drivers?

It looks like one should be able to rig up a solid metal handle pretty easily. Have you thought of that since the drills are good otherwise?

Makita makes a 1/2" cordless impact driver. It's a beast!

If you are going the cordless direction I would recommend the makita if you have lots of batteries. Its heavy and not cheap and it drains batteries quickly but I burnt out my last smaller cordless impact on sip screws(after my $5 garage sale special corded B&D impact fell apart).

It does have the torque.

I have plenty of Makita 18v batteries and we like to go cordless as much as we can so I am going to explore that option. I love my smaller Makita impacts.

I agree on the Makita impacts! Best cordless drill hands down! I also have a Hitachi D13VF corded drill. I've used it for about 5 years, and for the price($90) it is really a workhorse. I'ts out powered a lot of drills twice the price. Plus the aux. handle has metal threads into the metal housing.

These 10" GRK are being driven through and into what? hardwood, softwood? I have noticed that driving T-30 GRK screws into soft wood is not a problem but when encountering hardwood there is a problem and a pilot hole is needed. After driven thousands of GRK I have only broken a few bits, 5-8 perhaps, and usually it happens when hitting a knot and a fresh battery. I do like the color coding provided by one maker, don't recall the maker. T-30= black.

You could try you local auto parts franchise, say Napa or Snap-On. These may be of a higher grade. These use 3/8 square drive and would fit the heavy duty Makita driver well.
