24x24 barn.
8 or 9" pitch with a collar tie.
I'm looking for timber size and layout options (no purlins....I don't think)

I'm building it.
I have always used rough sawn common rafters in the past (16"oc).
I'd like something with more meat and a greater visual appeal.
Purlins aren't out of the question but I'd like to crawl before I try to walk, so to speak.
Also, I'd like to be able to put it together on the ground and lift it with a crane which another reason for the question.

the point being, this is difficult to do over the internet...
lots of variables. including the stuff i listed, but also things like what the plate sizes are, how you are holding the building together, snow load, wind load, etc.
you'd be better served by working with someone local - engineer, building department, timber framer, etc. to help you do this.
lots of folks here can help you sort out HOW to do this, if that is what you might be interested in (and lots of references for that online as well as in print).

Hi Berry,
I didn't, (and still really don't,) know what to say, thanks to Mike, I don't think I have to now, (thank's Mike.) You just have too many unknowns to know where to start, and now I believe you are outside my design requirements, in as such, I would never facilitate a frame with out over hangs, for one point. Sorry, if we aren't giving you what you need, but I'm afraid we need more from you, before we could be of any real aid.

Hi Berry,
You are on your way, I can see what you are thinking now, and the style you are working can be a challenge, both in design and aesthetics. I am a member of the TFG and love it, but I think you will get more of a broad range of feedback from the timber wrights, (me included) if you join the Forestry Forums Timber Frame and Log building section. It is a larger community with a range of skill base from zero to master timber wrights.
