I am looking for a detailed design drawing for a king tuss for a timber frame porch I am building. It needs to be 7/12 pitch and will be on posts at 12 feet. Timbers will be 6x4. Thanks.

Hi Yooperdirt,

We can see what others have to say, but 6"x4" for a King Post Truss is pushing it without going into some "laminate design" types, or more advanced joinery to make you demensions work. Have you done a lot of timber framing? It's doable, but you really should have a PE look at your design before moving to layout and jointing. Also try posting on:

What is the span?
What is the roof area that the truss will be supporting?
What is your snow load?
etc. etc.

Thanks guys.

I can make it out of 6x6 no problem. I will be using red pine. I went to Northhouse so I have some experience. I operate a saw mill and built the house myself. The truss will be spaning 12 feet and will be on two maybe three concrete split face block piers. The porch will be built off the gable end of my house and I plan on using conventional framing to tie it back to the house. The house is on a 8 inch block fundation so I cannot really set posts back at the house side of the porch.
So the heavy timber frame will be isolated out on the piers. The porch will be out 6 feet from the house. We are heavy snow load here in Upper Michigan.

We do this all the time, why is it not possible in this case. I do not see good results when "new" architecture is just attached with lags to a pre existing structures.

I would also suggest posting picture of the work site and some drawings, either here or provide a link. 12' seems doable, but there are other factors I would like to see to be certain of the advice I would share. If the end bent is a "timber framed king post truss assembly," I would not structurally or aesthetically want to use stick built "tie in" to the existing house. Build it as a timber frame, or stick build it out as a standard build. Mixing the two methods often leads to problems.

Regards,

jay

Here are some pictures. I have no existing nailers or jack studs on the house to accomidate this porch design. The building inspector suggested that I use hangers to tie in at my double top plate on my stud wall. I would weld up some hangers to accomidate two 4x6's. My rafters would then sit on those.
