I have been following along, and now that I see your idea and concept Randy, this is very much a Eastern European hip roof design more than any other vernacular folk timber style you can find for hipped roofs. I very much like all of DL advice on this thus far, and believe his overall concept, approach and advice for you is of good order, and a theme to follow.

Of all "European" forms of hipped roof assemblies, I am doubtful you would find any more robust, better designed, or with a longer (unbroken) history in the folk styles than you would find among the Swiss. Anything European as old (perhaps older-no surviving examples- in far Eastern Europe) is much less "evolved" and does not have the unbroken lineage, documentation, or surviving types, that you find among the Swiss designs.
