I was browsing the website of byrd tool which is known for the spiral planer cutterheads they produce. I noticed that they have a listing for the Makita KP312 beam planer. I was surprised to see this as I was under the assumption that there was no alternative to the crappy blades that Makita sells for this planer. Does anyone have any knowlege or experience relating to this cutterhead? Thanks in advance.

I reached out to the mfg as well as this distributor from up north ( http://shelixheads.com/SHELIX-heads_for_Planers/SHELIX_Heads_for_Planers_by_MAKITA )
I will report back when I hear something.

If anyone wants the Blueprint for the cutterhead let me know and i will email it to you. As soon as I get around to pulling off my old cutterhead to confirm the specs I will likely be ordering. It sounds like it will take a while to get in as this is a custom order, but I will report back when I get it in.

From Byrd Tool-
Mr. Billingsley,

Sorry we are in the process of changing out website provider's so it is down for repairs now. The SHELIX for the Makita KP-312 is $470.00, this included the first set of insert and bearings. You can order directly from us is you wish, we do not keep this item in stock and current delivery is about 12 weeks. I will send the drawing so you can confirm the spec's for the Makita KP-312, we got the dimension from a customer and are not sure that all of the planers were manufactured with the same spec's. If you have any questions please let us know. I am putting you catalog in the mail today.

Thanks
Sara

Trevor, in early 2012 I had Byrd heads made for a KP312 and another large beam planer. I dealt with Holbren Sales, the salesman's name was Dan, I believe. So Holbren and Byrd ought to have the specs on file for the KP312. (Rather than take the measurements--and liability--myself, I removed and sent the head to Holbren to be measured.)

We work almost exclusively with hardwoods, and a good bit of our material is to some degree air-dried. So these heads have been very helpful to us. I found the edge quality of Makita's blades to be excellent. Indeed, surface finish from Makita's blades when new is downright silky compared to the results from the Byrd. But after several hundred feet of use the Byrd becomes the winner, and continues to plane without tear-out in sloped grain for a long time.

Another aspect of the Byrd head... reduced noise.

One caution... the cutters are of course very brittle. And absentmindedly sliding a portable tool like the KP312 along, say, the shelf where it's stored, can, in a moment, lead to 50 bucks worth of broken cutters. Or $100, if one is a slow learner like myself.

Thank you very much for the feedback. It is much appreciated. I am in a similar situation, which is why I have been looking at the Byrd head. I am mostly working with Oak and Hickory that is fairly dry. They still had the specs on file but turn-around is looking to be about 12 weeks or so. Do you remember how difficult or easy it was swapping heads? They say that they will press the bearings in for me, so It looks fairly simple. Thanks again for the feedback.

Thanks David and Trevor both this sounds like a wonderful upgrade to an excellent tool. We work mostly in soft woods, yet this upgrade appears worth the effort for any species...

Update-
I got the spiral cutterhead from Byrd about a week ago. Turnaround was a little shorter than quoted at about 7 weeks. Install was simple and only took about 20 minutes. The tolerances were dead on, so hats off to Byrd tool. First impressions are that its quiet, leaves no tear-out. Finish was better than I was expecting. Won't burn. Tested only on white oak w/ 20% MC so far. Let me know if anyone has any specific questions.

Trevor,
How has the head made out after a few months of use?
