Right, so I got a job working at a timber framing company and I'm a blacksmith when I'm not working there.
Right now I'm wondering what sizes of chisels and slicks I should make. My current thought is to do a full set starting at 1/2" and going up to 2" in 1/4" steps. I'm asking this as I'm still reasonably new at the job (less than a year in), and I want to expand the selection of equipment I have available to me.
Currently my hand tool selection is entirely comprised of stuff made by me, and I like that theme. Right now I have a 2" slick, 2" chisel, 1" chisel, and a 1" corner chisel. I'm thinking of adding in chisels stepped in 1/4" increments from 1/2" up to 2 1/4"

So, what should I add? Even if it's not a chisel or slick, what other handy tools should I consider?

I use 1.5" and 2" framing chisels the most. Sometimes I use a 1", but that is rare. My slicks are 3" to 3 3/8". 3" is fine. If you are working by hand a lot, then I'd want a 3 1/2# axe with a 26" to 28" handle, and another with a 36" handle for scoring and heavier work. I also use a broad axe for hewing and other shaping chores.

Thanks for pointing out the broad axe, not something I would have thought of. I'll have to see what I can locate for physical reference before I make one. I've done a couple smaller axes, but nothing like a broad axe. Same for going bigger on the slick.

Out of curiosity, do you think making the slick heavier would be helpful?

I wouldn't go overboard. If you have access to some antique ones, I would try to copy those fairly closely. I like a nice gentle sweep along the length of the back. I have a twin pair of PS&Ws that are a real joy to use. My broad-axe is a single bevel, about 8" long. I don't think you would want one any bigger than that.

I've got a feller out here with a horde of old framing and hand tools. I'm sure he'll let me borrow stuff to copy or for trade.

I'm a little late to the forum, haven't posted in long time. I have a 2 5/8 slick and a 3 1/4 slick. The smaller one is the one I use. The larger one (lee valley chestnut) is to heavy and awkward. I don't think it's a heft issue, but rather a comfort issue. My slick was given to me from an owner who built much of his frame himself, but couldn't sharpen and he was done with it. it was an early Barr knock off. It is a cherished possession of mine, and holds an edge long time.
