If you go to the forestry forum at www.forestryforum.com
and look in either the chain saw section or the Sawmilling section you may find answers to your questions. Also, doing a search here, or over there could produce some info.
Good luck,

Brock,
I know this is a very delayed answer. I have an Alaskan mill. I bought the "rip" chain for my big Stihl (065)... (about $85.00).
You'll need a very long straight-edge (I used a steel beam) for the first cut, and you'll find the old adage, "you lose no time in whetting" appropriate.
I ended up trading wood to a "hobbyist" sawyer for him to cut my logs.
I did, however, cut some root plates that his mill could never have done, and they are fabulous.
I treat the Alaskan Mill as a "one-off" specialty type tool. You'll eat a lot of sawdust, you'll re-learn that jigging takes longer than the cut... and if you do a lot, you'll find a sawyer like I did!
