This is way-advanced notice but anyone who does or supervises restoration work or is interested in traditional building methods and materials should attend the Preservation Trades Network (PTN) International Preservation Trades Workshop (IPTW) next summer in Virginia. The IPTWs usually have a session on timber framing but it is not a complete class on how to do timber framing. If there is a log or two to hew you can get a lesson and try your hand at it. You may be able to learn and try riving clapboards or shingles. There are many other topics covered and I have found the information and experience gained at the IPTWs I have attended to be invaluable. The IPTW 2015 was held in Vermont and just ended and the IPTW 2016 information is not on there website yet so we will need to follow up in the future to get the dates and exact location. Save your pennies, it's worth traveling for. IPTW 2016 is also the 20th anniversary of PTN so there may be some special celebration, too. http://www.iptw.org/index.htm
