I joined the forum to hopefully learn from experienced craftsmen here in the UK. There have been no new topics on matters affecting the UK industry since 2016 (eg. changes to building regs, sourcing timber following Brexit, etc.).

I wanted to make some glib remark about foundations and posts being required to build a successful community but I won't (irony).

And what do you find from the Fellowship Guild there on UK's scene? Man, they nipped any open discussion in the bud, and good. No, to be fair I feel your pain and according to my analysis we have to look no further than Mark Zukkerman (fb) to get an answer, there being a certain convergence in declining participation here and growth there.

Hello FireHorse,

I just got a chance to check emails and updates...I'm not sure "glib remark" will get much attention (LOL!!!) but I, for one, would love to here your comments, and viewpoints on the topic.

There might be other vienue for discussion, both private and public, on the topic that would be of service perhaps?

Hi Firehorse,

I wonder why you choose to hide behind a Nom de Plum ? Are you a Guild member ?

A lot of web forum traffic has now moved over onto other platforms such as Twitter / Facebook / |Instagram. etc. It needs to be recognised that those platforms do not necessarily build a data bank of information like this forum that can easily be searched & querried. Have you tried to do that yet ? or are you seeking instant gratification from the likes of Instagram pictures ? There is no harm in that approach especially if a person is dyslexic. This forum really could do with an easy way to post pics.

I suspect that a lot of the TFG diehards are just taking a rest in between felling trees / hewing / building and publishing having grown tired of forum back bighting where little control can be excercised by self with the poster instead being entirely reliant on moderators who might or might not agree with their or others point of view.

Some of us work away quietly trying to generate opportunities (learning / projects / work) for self and others. (See https://twitter.com/OWGGroup )

If you have something to say or a question to ask then just say it and hopefully this will prompt someone to post an informed answer.

Looking back to see the way ahead !

I don't see anywhere to click to begin a new topic. Is the whole forum in atrophy mode?

OK, I missed that thread options section accessible through the existing thread itself.

Hi Richard,

I am still alive and kicking (just). I now have twin grandsons and hope that I live long enough to teach them about the woods and timber-framing.

We are currently working on making a small home office timber frame from one Douglas fir tree milled up on our Woodland Mills mobile saw inside the cruck barn that we built in my woodland in South Oxfordshire.

Checkout our Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/OWGGroup/status/1230182515224301570

Unfortunately Covid19 keeps getting in the way of making progress. Since Boxing day we have been entered yet again into another Lockdown situation to try and keep control of rising hospitalisation and death figures.

A while back I wrote a 16 page article for publication in Timber Framing on how we built the (all hand hewn) cruck framed barn however the TF editors could not be bothered reading, reviewing and commenting on this even though it was them who asked me to produce it in the first place !

I am once again no longer a Guild member.

Looking back to see the way ahead !
