I am currently designing a large timber frame cabin with a stone foundation and first floor. Does Timber framing work well with stone foundations and what websites/books do you recommend.

Background: I am an engineer who studies timber framing and sustainable building design in my spare time, with older building methods being of particular interest and note.

Absolutely. I'm sure that most of the timber structures in the world are just sitting on stone. If the code is a concern, you may have to devise a way to tie the frame to the stone. Unless there are crazy lateral loads (wind or seismic), I think it'd be fine without any connection though.
