I was wondering if anyone out there uses wood dowel pegs for structural connections? If so, could you tell me how you design them and what references are good. Thanks

Dick Schmidt (a TFG member and professor at the Univ. of Wyoming) has authored, with graduate students, two reports on timber frame joinery. The reports were supported by the USDA. One concentrates on joint strength and the other on peg strength. Both are available free to our members via PDF download from our members only page. Printed copies can be purchased for $15 (I think) from the Timber Frame Business Council. --- Contact Jerry Rouleau at 603-643-5033 for details.

I second Brian's recommendation. As a practicing engineer, I am perfectly comfortable putting my stamp on connections designed in line with Dick's research.
