My wife and I are thinking of a having a timber frame home made in Nova Scotia. It is a 1 1/2 story structure on a full-basement foundation. The 1st floor is 1,000 square feet. I am wondering about the most energy efficient and cost effective way of enclosing the structure. I know of three methods:

SIPs - but this may not be feasable. The technology may be too new in the area and I understand it needs to be put up right.

2x6 studs with fiberglass batts

2x4 studs with fiberglass batts and 1 1/2" of rigid foam

How much of a difference in insulation value are the last two methods? What are the pros and cons? Would the rigid foam make the exterior walls more damage prone? I also understand that the benefits of one system over another decreases with house size.

What are your thoughts of using solid-core vinyl siding. I understand it is low maintanance and has some insulation benefits.

Thanks you for your time. This house planning is new to me and I am trying to make the best choice BEFORE the house in built - I do have 20/20 hindsight.
