I recently picked up some 8X8 and 8X10 pine barn beams from a local barn that was taken down. Some are as long as 38 feet. While I see no obvious evidence of bug damage, do I NEED to do anything to the beams with respect to bugs before I reuse them in a new timber frame structure? I don't prefer to if I don't have to.

brad_bb,

if the beams show no sign of decay of any kind and were kept dry then I would think you do not have to do anything. So it is really your choice to leave them as they are or "be save" and treat them.

No, I didn't see any signs of decay. I just don't prefer to have to have them run through a kiln..lugging them to someone, and then the cost of the service. If I wanted to treat beams at home, what method would I use? I am familiar with sprays like Sevin that I use in my vineyard (yes I have a nice vineyard in Illinois). I'm also familiar with using Stylett oil on trees in early spring to prevent hatch of any insect eggs. I do plan on finishing the beams with some sort of darker color and urethane. I actually have to do research on finishes as I am a relative newbie to wood -steel no problem.
