Hi Folks

I'm working on the restoration of an historic frame that was cut by Humphreys Ltd of London UK in 1907. The original spec (we're very fortunate to actually have a copy) called for a felt lining called 'Stoniflex Felt' and I'm trying to track this product down. I recovered some samples from site: a dark brown, fibrous felt about 1/2 inch thick.

I'm wondering if any of you fine people have come across a database / search tool / other resource that is useful for tracking down historic building materials like this?

Tried a google search using different spellings
and came up with this. Stoneflex
They are in the UK and sell a building cladding product. Perhaps this is something produced by them at one time if not now.

Wrong stuff. (I think Stoniflex is a roofing felt made from pulled Indian jute) I just wondered if anyone had come across a whizzo database online?

Check with your local historic resource agency (provincial ?) They usually have lots of stuff available ....just no way to organize it and present it in a usable to the general public format.

Howdy,

I had a prof at UVic, not too far from you, about ten years ago who is a heck of a nice guy and would likely be helpful. I did a quick search and here's his work contact:

Alastair Kerr, Heritage Legislation and Standards Officer
250 356-1194 Alastair.Kerr@gems2.gov.bc.ca

I doubt he'd remember me, but you pay taxes and he's a nice guy, so I'm sure he'd be happy to tell you if such a computer contraption exists.
Best of luck,

Zach

Hi Bob

I'm not sure what a 'local historic resource agency (provincial ?)' looks like but it sure sounds great! Can you give me a little more info about where I might start looking? Thanks for your ideas.

Gord

a little internet searching found the following;
Here is one association in the states http://www.acra-crm.org/ There is likely to be one in BC.
Also this link is to laws pertaining to preservation , thus would lead me to belive there has to be a agency that enforces, provides assistance, etc.
http://www.qp.gov.bc.ca/statreg/stat/H/96187_01.htm

And one final but most promising link,
http://www.mcaws.gov.bc.ca/heritage_branch/index.htm
Best of luck
Bob
