At the moment, I'm searching and researching for Japanese gate construction details. I have an old gate and want to build the support structure/roof for it.

I am also interested in JBT in general, such as the growing, curing, and use of bamboo in the southwestern coastal USA.

I am not sure if this can help, but seeing your posting has been unanswered since 11/99 I'll shoot the long shot. I know a fellow who told me a story of when he was 12 yrs. old and he was with his father who was stationed in Japan in the U.S. military during the late `50's and early `60's. He spoke fondly of a bamboo craftsman who built large gas powered model airplanes. He built the model's frame from bamboo that he cut into splints and steamed into individual shapes . If you wish to arrange contact to hear the story or interview this fellow then let me know.
sincerely- Bucky B.
