What is the best way to clean up old Softwood timbers (Spruce and Hemlock) from a salvaged barn. I' don't want to plane them, I just want to clean them up before reusing them in my house.

You could possibly pressure wash them? I'm not sure how this would work, but I think that's a method that others have used. I haven't so I can say from personal experience. Good luck, and maybe someone else will post a method for you to use. Jim

I'm not to sure pressure washing is your best choice. If the timbers ae extremely soiled, a low pressure wash may help. High pressure can do serious damage to the patina, particularly in softwoods.

I wood recommend dry brushing with a short stiff bristled scrub brush. A little compresses air can help speed the process, but wear adusk mask. Airborne dust can contain racoon fecis which can cause some pretty serious health problems.
