I need to cut a 9" mortise and my store-bought Stanley "fat max" chisel has a large, fat handle that gets in the way. If I look on ebay, there are several "framing" and "mortising" chisels out there, but will these allow me to cut 9 inches straight down? For example:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13871&item=6144756393&rd=1

Will this do the job? It appears the handle will not get in the way and let me cut along the same plane for as far as I can go.

I'm probably going to pick up a corner chisel as well. Do you have any other recommendations?

Regards, Tim

The chisel on the ebay link looks a bit light, and you would need to cut a very short length of pipe(3/8") to use as a top ferrule on the wood handle, otherwise the handle will blow apart when you start with the mallet. This chisel will allow you to mortice down, and a new, stronger handle would be easy enough to make....
Also, check out barr chisels.....

Last year I purchased several Barr chisels. Simply put, great tools and great service.
