I'm looking for the name of a vise like simple wood tool that holds logs while you use a drawknife to shave the log down to what you want it to look like. Also if the are any directions or plans for this device. I saw one recently that the person using it simple placed the piece of wood into it and slid a lever like piece of wood up toward him and the wood was held tightly, unfortunately I did not have the chance to ask about it.

was the person you saw sitting on a bench, and was that bench part of the vise?
sounds like a draw bench or shaving horse?

Hello,

Here is a link to a school in North Carolina whre you can either buy a shaving mule (horse) or the plans to build one. You can also take any number of very interesting classes. Drew has put together a great school for learning some of the traditional woodcrafting skills.

It never hurt a person to have options..
Just yesterday I got my monthly Lee Valley sale catalog and on the cover is a fine picure of a fellow using a shaving horse. Page 38 has plans for $9.50.
I built an adirondac rocker a while back from Lee Valley plans and remain impressed.
Its: www.leevalley.com or 1-800-871-8158.
Have fun.

Zach

It is funny that LV sells plans for what is freely available on the net. The plans LV sells came from a local bodger who built his bench based upon the drawing above.

It is pretty straighforward to make...lemme know if you have specific questions.

Got the LV catalogue and saw the shaving horse picture on the cover - it is exactly what I want, and I think I will use the dimensions listed above on the internet. Thanks for all the help!

Let me tell you that shaving oak pegs on one of these sure makes quick work!

after looking over the greenwoodworking link, i had to "bump the thread"
that's a good page and the links at the bottom prove for some thought-provoking reading, especially the mortice and tenon page....
