I have been picking up old boring machines at auctions in my area. Two of the machines have few teeth missing from the gears. Does anyone know how to repair these gears or a place I could send them out to be re-cut.

Thanks. Doug

Doug:
I'll do some research on that, and as soon as I have an answer I'll post it here.

Doug,
My partner in the tool business says to buy another machine for parts and get the gears off that one to replace the broken gears.
Also, I have a call in to someone who has repaired the gears and when I get that info I'll post it here.

I got some info on Saturday about how their boring machine gears were repaired.
It seems that a machinist made welds onto the gear and then shaped them to the profile of the gear tooth. I know welding cast iron or whatever type of old metal these are is difficult, to say the least. But this method may work if the person doing the welding knows how to do it properly.

Jim, Thanks. I thought a machinist could repair the gears. Was hoping there might have been a easier way. Have you ever had any re-casting done on any parts?

Jim,

Thanks for the info, checked with a machinist and he said he could fix them, so will let you know how they turn out. Also talked with a small foundry and they would be able to re-cast the other parts that may be broken. They could also re-cast the gears.

Also after reading the last thread, I did not mean to have the sentence about the machinist sound like it did. So sorry if that came over as if I already knew that I did not mean it that way.

I will let you know what I fine, Also if you are looking for particular tool let me know. I have been picking up lots slicks, adz, froes, broad axes, boring machines, draw knifes, chisels, etc... at auctions around here...

Thanks again

Doug

We're always looking for tools to restore and make available to the public.
Send me a list by private email and we'll see.
Thanks for the offer.
