Would appreciate anyone's thoughts on the best "new" chisels (sticks) .... I know the brands but am asking from the experienced people which they like the best ....

I bought Barr chisels last year. Very nice chisels. The company was wonderful to deal with...I'd do it again.

I like and use both my Sorby 1 1/2 and a variety of Barrs. The Barrs fit my hand better, giving me better control for paring and shaping visible edges. The Sorby has been a workhorse that I'm not afraid to pound on. As you go, you too will develop a fondness for a particular chisel for different tasks.

I would echo jim haslip's post, Sourcing out older chisels is a good move and my favorite tool is an old warnock framing chlsel. I beleive Jim Rogers also sells tools which have been sharpened, making them much more valuable in my opinion. Renovating an old chisel or adze or axe can be a lot of work unless you have good machining capabilities.
