thanks to all who post here. I am learning a lot. My question- I am in the market for a good felling axe. narrowed down to GB and Oxhead. I own a GB Scandanavian Forest axe and really appreciate the quality of it. I have never even handled an Oxhead. The issue is that the Oxhead single bit is quite a bit less expensive than the GB double bit.(I can't find a GB single bit) Do any of you have direct comparisons or suggestions? I don't mind spending money for quality but don't like to buy the most expensive assuming it is always better. Thanks!

I have the Iltis oxhead, and every time the handle breaks I make a new one right away. Very handy tool, but I call it a limbing axe, not a felling axe, It would be fine felling 8" or maybe 10" trees and score hacking lighter timbers(6x6).

Howdy,

I'm nothing more than a complete beginner when it comes to felling axes, but I can pass on some good advice I recently received after a post on this site.
Two folks suggested going bigger than I could find made today, a 5 pounder.
I bought a 5lb off ebay, a Keencutter, for thirty bucks, which seemed chancy but I think I got a nice axe.
Having cut a number of trees down with 3 pounders and polaskis (not recommended, but common on trailcrews) I am really pleased with the extra weight.
Here's the link to that post, albeit a little long:

Best of luck.

Zach

Yes, Highland Hardware...

I can be there in 55 minutes if traffic is thin. They have started carrying the Oxhead axes and have a few different felling axes. I saw them last time I was there.

They also have a few of those Gransfors historic reproductions axes, including a cool broad axe based on an 11th century Danish axe (only $400).

Gransfors also makes a single bit felling axe they call their American pattern felling axe. I haven't seen one at Highland Hardware in about a year, though.

Have fun,

Gabel
