I have a retractable chalkline, made by shinwa ( http://www.shinwarules.com/products/chalkinklines.php) and would like to buy some new string for it. This has been a great chaulkline, but the fine string breaks quickly.... Can anyone suggest a commonly available fine string that would hold chalk?

I've heard it said that regular chalk line makes a line that is too fuzzy. People have said they have replaced their regular line with a braided Dacron. Braided Dacron is usually sold as fishing line, I believe. Jim Rogers

thanks, Jim. In that case, I'll ask my dad. He moved off the farm a few years ago to a cottage on a lake and he's been fishing ever since....

I have found that using 36 lb. test braided Catfish line, works the best. Also called Squid line by framers I've met from Cape Cod. Be sure to get uncoated line, it holds the chalk better. You can fuzz the line up a bit,to hold more chalk, by using ex-fine sandpaper.
Happy Snaping, Tom

thanks for the specifics, Tom. And yes, I am happy using the snapline. I use centerlines a lot.

I found some braided fishing line, it's making a fine enough line, but the line doesn't have as much stretch as the original, making the actual snap more difficult. It will do the job for now.... I may order in the original line again in future.
