Hi there, I have questions about peg sizes and shapes.

When making pegs, we have used a saw to get 1" stock of white oak into octagons, and driven them into the peg holes.

1.) We have two peg holes each connecting each post to a beam (the bent). For one of our post-beam connections: One of the holes, the peg drove successfully. The other peg would not drive. We bored out the hole again. I shaved a 1" peg, and drove that through. It seemed a little loose. Not loose by hand, but more loose with a hammer. So it is smaller.
---Would it be safe to have one full-sized peg and one slightly smaller in diameter, holding the post and beam together? I was thinking that the larger one will be taking more load than the smaller.

2.) When making pegs by hand, with a shave horse, what size do you try to get? Slightly larger than the peg hole, or can it be somewhat the same size?

3.) Also, which shape do you try to get? Round, square, octagon, etc?

Thank you.
