Please check out TFJ nos 34, 35 & 36 where Marc Guilhemjouan gives a good rendition of French centre line scribe rule, especially in regard to the initial marking of timbers and stacking / aligning same for scribing.

Paul Russell wrote an excellent article in the Architects Journal no 25 in March 1992 and this gives step by step illustrations on how to join together out of square or irregular timber.

Really it’s better if you can get somebody to demonstrate the technique to you.
